About an Hour

About an Hour

About an hour is a kinetic sculpture. The piece mimics the language that computers use when describing how much time is remaining in a given task. The text, however, is very vague and famously incorrect, so the result is a doubling of the frustration that stems from waiting for the computer to load. The sculpture turns every so often revealing a new phrase - "about an hour" "a few minutes" "about an minute" "a few seconds". A arduino micro-controller handles the timing of the turns and adds a random element. The piece takes a different amount of time each rotation.
When "a few seconds" is done it simply rewinds and starts again. By making waiting itself an element in the piece I am raising questions about how much the computer does to satiate its user and how much machines are lying to us every day.
